The “2023 HAKKA EXPO” officially commenced on August 11th and will continue until October 15th in Taoyuan, Taiwan. Among the main exhibition halls, the “Taiwan Pavilion” takes center stage with the theme “Roots and Prosperity – Better with Hakka.” The pavilion features three thematic areas: “Adapting Taiwan,” “Enriching Taiwan,” and “Taiwan, a Shared Treasure,” collaborating with all 14 counties and cities across Taiwan to offer a comprehensive portrayal of Hakka efforts and transformations throughout different eras. It allows visitors to understand how Hakka culture enriches Taiwan and how it contributes, coexists, and shares its glory on this land.

Upon entering the pavilion, visitors are greeted by the “Adapting Taiwan” area, characterized by a large straw-made dome art installation, narrating the lives and culture of the Hakka community rooted in Taiwan. Inside, various artifacts showcasing Hakka cuisine, crafts, music, and operas are displayed, highlighting the uniqueness and local essence of Taiwan’s Hakka culture. In the “Enriching Taiwan” section, an abundance of stacked paper signifies the Hakka community’s historical breakthroughs and contributions in Taiwan, illustrating how Hakka have shaped and enriched Taiwan’s diverse development. Transitioning to the “Taiwan, a Shared Treasure” segment, a rotating interactive bar showcases the innovative aspects of Hakka education, local revitalization, and culture, as well as the contemporary Hakka community’s confidence and creativity.

Additionally, there is an exhibition area for 14 counties and cities in Taiwan presenting its own distinctive Hakka culture. Starting from northern Taiwan, Taipei City’s “Speaking Out / Taking Place” and New Taipei City’s “Hakka in Transition,” portray the urban Hakka ambiance. Moving along Taiwan Route 3, it displays Taoyuan City’s “Hakka Infinite Poetics,” Hsinchu County’s “The Land Where Faith Gathered,” Hsinchu City’s “Hakka Alchemy,” Miaoli County’s “Mountain Due,” and Taichung City’s “The Green-Thumb Hakka.” Continuing through Nantou County’s “Hakka Among Hakka – Hakka People of Nantou” and Yunlin County’s “The Mysterious Hakka,” the journey leads to Taiwan Route 9, Taitung County’s “Taitung’s Hakka Roots” and Hualien County’s “Sense of Belonging.” The exploration culminates in Tainan City’s “Hakka in Tainan through 400 Years – A Concealed History,” and finally arrives in Kaohsiung City’s Liugdui area with “Inspire the Future, Innovate Hakka” and Pingtung County’s “Liugdui Hakka,” each area showcasing its own unique Hakka cultural features.

Over hundreds of years, the Hakka people have gradually adapted to Taiwan’s environment and way of life amid uncertainty and change. In this process of cultural fusion and diversity, issues such as self-identity and cultural inheritance and development have become crucial for contemporary Hakka communities. Visitors are warmly invited to the Taiwan Pavilion to explore the diverse facets of Hakka development in Taiwan.
